Exercice 1 — Identifier le bon registre
Pour chaque situation, choisissez la phrase qui correspond au registre approprié.
- You are writing a cover letter to apply for a senior position at a law firm. Which sentence is most appropriate?
- You are texting a close friend to cancel plans for tonight. Which sentence best fits the register?
- A journalist is writing a neutral news report. Which sentence is most suitable?
- You are giving a formal academic presentation. Which opening is appropriate?
Correction
- I am writing to express my strong interest in the position and to outline my relevant qualifications.
- Hey, really sorry but I can't make it tonight — something came up!

Exercice 2 — Associer chaque expression à son registre
Associez chaque expression anglaise à son registre correct : familier (informal), neutre (neutral) ou formel (formal).
- Match each expression with its register — (A) 'I'm gonna give it a go', (B) 'I will attempt to complete the task', (C) 'I'll try to do it'.
- Match each expression with its register — (A) 'He passed away last Tuesday', (B) 'He died last Tuesday', (C) 'He kicked the bucket last Tuesday'.
- Match each expression with its register — (A) 'We wish to enquire about your services', (B) 'What do you guys offer?', (C) 'I'd like some information about your services'.
- Match each expression with its register — (A) 'She's pretty good at maths', (B) 'She demonstrates a strong aptitude for mathematics', (C) 'She's a total maths whiz'.
Correction
- 'I'm gonna give it a go' is informal, 'I'll try to do it' is neutral, and 'I will attempt to complete the task' is formal.
- 'He kicked the bucket last Tuesday' is informal, 'He died last Tuesday' is neutral, and 'He passed away last Tuesday' is formal.
- 'What do you guys offer?' is informal, 'I'd like some information about your services' is neutral, and 'We wish to enquire about your services' is formal.

Exercice 3 — Compléter avec le bon registre
Complétez chaque phrase avec la forme ou le terme approprié au registre indiqué entre parenthèses.

- NEUTRAL — The new policy ___ (have an effect on) both full-time and part-time employees. (Use a clear, neutral verb phrase.)
