These exercises build directly on the course concept of adapting the same message to different contexts, registers, and audiences — a hallmark of genuine C1 fluency in English.

Exercice 1 — Reading the Room: Choosing the Right Register
For each situation, choose the response that best reflects appropriate speech adaptation for the given context and audience.
- You need to tell your manager that a project deadline cannot be met. Which response is most appropriate?
- You are explaining a technical delay to a close colleague in a casual team chat. Which response fits the context best?
- You are giving feedback on a student's essay in a formal academic setting. Which phrasing best suits the context?
- At a networking event, you want to briefly introduce yourself to a potential employer. Which opening best adapts to this semi-formal context?
Correction
- B) I wanted to flag that we're facing some challenges that may impact our ability to deliver by the agreed deadline.
- C) Heads up — we've hit a snag with the system, so it might take a bit longer.
- B) This section would benefit from greater clarity and a more cohesive argument.
- C) I work in marketing communications and I'm currently exploring new opportunities — great event, by the way.
Exercice 2 — Same Message, Different Audience
Complete each exchange by writing the missing turn in a register that appropriately matches the context and audience described.
- Context: A formal email to a client. The sender wants to reschedule a meeting.
Sender: 'Dear Ms. Clarke, I am writing to request ___.' - Context: A quick message to a teammate on a work messaging app about the same rescheduled meeting.
Sender: 'Hey Sam, any chance we could ___?' - Context: A student addressing a professor after class to ask for an extension on an assignment.
Student: 'Professor Mills, I was wondering if it might be possible ___.' - Context: The same student texting a classmate about the extension.
Student: 'Just asked Prof Mills if ___.'
Correction
- Dear Ms. Clarke, I am writing to request a postponement of our meeting scheduled for Thursday, as an urgent matter has arisen on our end.
- Hey Sam, any chance we could push Thursday's meeting back a bit? Something's come up on my end.
- Professor Mills, I was wondering if it might be possible to have a short extension on the assignment, as I have been dealing with some unforeseen personal circumstances.
- Just asked Prof Mills if I could get a few extra days for the assignment — fingers crossed she says yes.
Exercice 3 — Shifting Registers: Reformulate for a New Audience
Reformulate each sentence so that it suits the new context indicated. Keep the core meaning identical while adapting the tone, register, and vocabulary.
- Original (casual, to a friend): 'The boss went totally ballistic when he found out about the mistake.' → Reformulate in a formal register for a written report.
- Original (formal, in a report): 'The implementation of the proposed measures is contingent upon the allocation of sufficient budgetary resources.' → Reformulate in plain, accessible language for a general audience.
- Original (neutral, informational): 'The event has been cancelled due to low attendance.' → Reformulate in a warm, empathetic tone for an announcement to disappointed participants.
- Original (informal, spoken): 'Basically, we just need everyone to pull together and stop dropping the ball.' → Reformulate in a professional tone suitable for a team briefing with senior leadership present.
Correction
- The manager expressed significant dissatisfaction upon becoming aware of the error.
- We can only put these plans into action if we have enough money in the budget.
- We completely understand this may be disappointing, and we are sorry to let you know that the event will not be going ahead as planned, due to lower-than-expected attendance.
- What we need at this stage is a concerted team effort and a stronger commitment to meeting our collective responsibilities.
