Exercice 1 — Choisir la bonne expression de reformulation
Pour chaque situation, choisissez l'expression de reformulation la plus appropriée parmi les quatre propositions.
- You want to clarify a complex idea you just stated by using simpler language. Which expression fits best? A) 'To put it simply, the system works by rewarding consistent effort.' B) 'What I mean is, the system is very complicated.' C) 'In other words, nobody really understands it.' D) 'That is to say, the problem is unsolvable.'
- You want to rephrase what you said because your listener looks confused. Which expression is most appropriate? A) 'In other words, let's change the subject.' B) 'What I mean is, the deadline has already been moved twice.' C) 'To put it simply, it's irrelevant.' D) 'That is to say, I disagree completely.'
- You want to restate a formal point in equivalent but different terms. Which expression suits the context best? A) 'To put it simply, the project failed.' B) 'What I mean is, everyone is unhappy.' C) 'In other words, the initiative did not achieve its intended outcomes.' D) 'That is to say, we should give up.'
- You are explaining a technical concept to a non-specialist and want to make it more accessible. Which expression is best? A) 'In other words, the algorithm is even more complex than it seems.' B) 'To put it simply, the algorithm sorts data by comparing values repeatedly.' C) 'What I mean is, nobody can understand algorithms.' D) 'That is to say, algorithms are outdated.'
Correction
- A) 'To put it simply, the system works by rewarding consistent effort.' is the best choice because 'To put it simply' signals a deliberate move toward clearer, more accessible language.
- B) 'What I mean is, the deadline has already been moved twice.' is the most appropriate because 'What I mean is' directly addresses a misunderstanding and offers a clarification.
- C) 'In other words, the initiative did not achieve its intended outcomes.' is the best answer because 'In other words' introduces a restatement that preserves the formal register of the original idea.
- B) 'To put it simply, the algorithm sorts data by comparing values repeatedly.' is the best choice because 'To put it simply' announces a deliberate simplification aimed at a non-specialist audience.
