Exercice 1 — ¿Qué quieren decir realmente?

Lee cada situación y elige la interpretación más precisa de lo que el hablante quiere decir implícitamente.

  1. A British colleague looks at your 45-slide presentation and says: 'That's quite a lot of information to take in.' What does he most likely mean?
  2. Your British friend tries your cooking and says: 'It's certainly… different.' What is she implying?
  3. During a meeting, someone proposes a risky plan and a colleague responds: 'That's one way of looking at it.' What does this most likely signal?
  4. A student submits a very poor essay and the professor writes: 'This shows you have attempted to engage with the topic.' What is the professor implying?
Correction

  1. He thinks the presentation is too long and overwhelming.
  2. She is politely saying she does not enjoy the food.
  3. The colleague is suggesting there are better alternatives without stating it directly.
  4. The professor is kindly pointing out that the essay is weak and needs major improvement.

Exercice 2 — Completa la conversación implícita

Completa cada diálogo con la respuesta más adecuada que refleje el uso del lenguaje implícito en inglés, tal como lo haría un hablante nativo en contexto C1.

  1. A: 'I've been waiting for you for over an hour. You said you'd be here at noon.' B: 'Yes, well, punctuality has never exactly been ___.'
  2. A: 'Did you enjoy the film?' B: 'Let's just say it wasn't quite ___ I was hoping for.'
  3. A: 'What did you think of his speech?' B: 'It was… ___ to say the least.'
  4. A: 'She told the whole office about your mistake.' B: 'Oh, how ___ of her.'
Correction

  1. Yes, well, punctuality has never exactly been my strongest suit, I'm afraid.
  2. Let's just say it wasn't quite what I was hoping for.
  3. It was… interesting to say the least.
  4. Oh, how terribly thoughtful of her.

Exercice 3 — Del lenguaje directo al implícito

Reformula cada enunciado directo utilizando el understatement o el lenguaje indirecto propio del inglés C1, como lo haría un hablante nativo.

  1. Reformula esta crítica directa usando understatement: 'This report is completely wrong and full of mistakes.'
  2. Reformula esta queja directa de forma implícita: 'You are always late and it is very disrespectful.'
  3. Reformula esta negativa directa usando lenguaje indirecto: 'I don't want to go to your party.'
  4. Reformula esta opinión negativa de forma sarcástica o con understatement: 'That idea is absolutely terrible.'
Correction

  1. This report might benefit from a more thorough review before it is submitted.
  2. I couldn't help but notice that timekeeping seems to be a bit of a challenge for you.
  3. I'm not entirely sure I'll be able to make it, but thank you so much for the invitation.
  4. I have to say, that particular idea may not be our strongest option going forward.
