Exercice 1 — Setting the Scene with Past Tenses
Complete each sentence with the correct past tense form of the verb in brackets. Write the full sentence as your answer.

- The streets ___ (be) unusually quiet that morning because most people had heard about the storm warning.

Exercice 2 — Guiding Your Listener Through the Story
Rewrite each sentence so that it sounds more like natural, guided storytelling at B2 level. Use the clue in brackets and write the full transformed sentence.
- I got to the café. I saw someone sitting at my usual table. (use 'as soon as' and the past perfect to show sequence)
- The meeting started. No one had prepared anything. (begin with 'By the time' to set the scene)
- She told us the news. We couldn't believe it. (use 'when' and the past continuous to add background detail)
- He realised he had taken the wrong road. He had been driving for two hours. (combine using 'only after')
Correction
- As soon as I got to the café, I noticed that someone had been sitting at my usual table.
- By the time the meeting started, it was clear that no one had prepared anything.
- When she was telling us the news, we couldn't believe what we were hearing.

Exercice 3 — Storytelling Errors to Fix
Each sentence contains one error related to past tense use or storytelling structure. Identify the mistake and rewrite the full corrected sentence.
