Exercises A2 : how to use passé composé (practice and corrections)

The passé composé is formed with a present-tense auxiliary verb (avoir or être) and a past participle. These exercises will help you practise its formation and key agreement rules.

Exercise 1 — Conjugate in the passé composé

Complete each sentence by conjugating the verb in brackets in the passé composé. Choose the correct auxiliary and form the past participle accurately.

1. Hier, je ___ (aller) au marché avec ma mère.
2. Nous ___ (prendre) le train de huit heures ce matin.
3. Mes amis ___ (venir) chez moi le soir et nous avons parlé longtemps.
4. Elle ___ (finir) son travail avant le dîner.

Exercise 2 — From present to passé composé

Transform each sentence from the present tense into the passé composé. Pay attention to the choice of auxiliary and past participle agreement where needed.

1. Je mange une pomme.
2. Elle arrive tôt à la réunion.
3. Ils vendent leur voiture.
4. Nous faisons un gâteau pour l’anniversaire.

Exercise 3 — Correct the mistakes in the passé composé

Each sentence contains one error in the formation or agreement of the passé composé. Rewrite the sentence correctly.

1. Elle a allée au cinéma avec ses amies.
2. Ils ont vendu leur maison et ils sont achetés un appartement.
3. J’ai été fatigué hier soir, alors je ai dormi tôt.
4. Elles sont resté chez elles tout le week-end.
