Exercises B1 : how to use gerund in Spanish (practice and corrections)

The Spanish gerund (el gerundio) is used to express ongoing actions, simultaneous actions, or the manner in which something is done. Practice its formation and usage with these three exercises based on the lesson.

Exercise 1 — Form the gerund

Complete each sentence by conjugating the verb in brackets into the gerund form. Write the full sentence in your answer.

1. Ella está ___ (leer) una novela en el sofá.
2. Estamos ___ (aprender) español juntos.
3. ___ (trabajar) mucho, consiguió su objetivo.
4. Él salió ___ (correr) hacia la puerta.

Exercise 2 — Transform sentences using the gerund

Rewrite each sentence by replacing the indicated construction with an estar + gerund structure to express an ongoing action in the present tense.

1. Ana busca a Carlos. (transformer avec estar + gérondif)
2. Yo espero en el café. (transformer avec estar + gérondif)
3. Ellos bailan en la fiesta. (transformer avec estar + gérondif)
4. Tú bebes un café. (transformer avec estar + gérondif)

Exercise 3 — Correct the gerund mistakes

Each sentence contains an error in the formation or use of the gerund. Identify the mistake and rewrite the entire sentence correctly.

1. Estoy hablando de parlar con mis amigos.
2. Ella está dormiendo — Gérondif écrit : Ella está dormando en el sofá.
3. Hablando es importante aprender idiomas. (faux ami : mauvais emploi du gérondif à la place de l’infinitif)
4. Él llegó en cantando a casa.
