You have just studied the conjugation and uses of the Spanish imperfect tense (el pretérito imperfecto). These exercises will help you practise regular endings for -ar, -er and -ir verbs as well as the three irregular verbs: ser, ir and ver.

Exercise 1 — Fill in the blanks – Imperfect tense

Complete each sentence by conjugating the verb in brackets in the imperfect tense. Rewrite the full sentence with the correct form.

  1. Cuando era niño, ___ (jugar) al fútbol todos los días.
  2. Nosotros ___ (vivir) en un pueblo tranquilo cerca del mar.
  3. Mis abuelos ___ (ir) a la playa todos los veranos.
  4. Ella ___ (ser) muy simpática y siempre ___ (cantar) por la mañana.
Correction

  1. Cuando era niño, jugaba al fútbol todos los días.
  2. Nosotros vivíamos en un pueblo tranquilo cerca del mar.
  3. Mis abuelos iban a la playa todos los veranos.
  4. Ella era muy simpática y siempre cantaba por la mañana.

Exercise 2 — Transform to past habit

Transform each sentence from the present tense to the imperfect to express a past habit. Rewrite the full sentence in the imperfect tense.

  1. Todos los días, me levanto temprano y desayuno con mi familia. (→ habitude passée)
  2. Mi abuela prepara tortillas y canta canciones antiguas. (→ habitude passée)
  3. Vosotros coméis juntos y veis la televisión por la tarde. (→ habitude passée)
  4. Los pájaros cantan por la mañana y el jardín está lleno de flores. (→ habitude passée)
Correction

  1. Todos los días, me levantaba temprano y desayunaba con mi familia.
  2. Mi abuela preparaba tortillas y cantaba canciones antiguas.
  3. Vosotros comíais juntos y veíais la televisión por la tarde.
  4. Los pájaros cantaban por la mañana y el jardín estaba lleno de flores.

Exercise 3 — Correct the conjugation mistakes

Each sentence contains one conjugation mistake in the imperfect tense. Identify the error and rewrite the full sentence correctly.

  1. Cuando tenía ocho años, yo ivaba al colegio en bicicleta.
  2. Ellos comían paella y bebíais agua fresca en el restaurante.
  3. Tú hablabes mucho con tu abuela cuando eras pequeño.
  4. Nosotros veamos películas todos los viernes por la noche.
Correction

  1. Cuando tenía ocho años, yo iba al colegio en bicicleta.
  2. Ellos comían paella y bebían agua fresca en el restaurante.
