Exercice 1 — Comprendre le sens global d'un discours
Lisez chaque extrait de discours et choisissez l'interprétation qui correspond le mieux au sens global exprimé par l'orateur.
- "We cannot afford to wait any longer. The evidence is clear, the solutions exist, and yet here we stand, debating the same points we debated a decade ago." What is the speaker's primary intent?
- "While some may argue that economic growth must take priority, I would invite you to consider that sustainability and prosperity are not mutually exclusive." What rhetorical strategy is the speaker using?
- "Let me be absolutely clear: this policy will not be reversed." What does the speaker's tone primarily communicate?
- "First, we must identify the root causes. Then, we can design targeted interventions. Finally, we evaluate their impact." What does this structure signal to the listener?
Correction
- To urge the audience to take immediate action by expressing frustration at inaction.
- The speaker is acknowledging an opposing view before presenting a reconciling perspective.
- A firm and unambiguous commitment to maintaining the policy.
- The speaker is following a clear sequential and logical structure to guide the audience through a process.
Exercice 2 — Intonation et intention du locuteur
Associez chaque description d'intonation ou de marqueur discursif à l'effet interprétatif qu'il produit dans un discours en anglais.
- A speaker's voice rises sharply at the end of a statement that is not a question.
- A speaker slows down their pace and lowers their pitch when introducing a key conclusion.
- A speaker uses the phrase "And this brings me to my central point" after a series of examples.
- A speaker places strong stress on the word "never" in the sentence "We have never seen anything like this before."
Correction
- This rising intonation on a statement signals that the speaker is seeking confirmation, expressing uncertainty, or inviting the audience to agree with what has just been said.
- Slowing down and lowering pitch signals to the listener that a central and important idea is being delivered, prompting the audience to pay close attention and retain the information.
- This discourse marker signals a logical transition from supporting evidence to the core argument, helping the audience understand the hierarchical structure of the speech.
- Placing emphatic stress on "never" intensifies the claim and communicates that the speaker considers this situation to be historically unprecedented, urging the audience to treat it with exceptional seriousness.
Exercice 3 — Structure logique et connecteurs de discours
Complétez chaque extrait de discours en choisissant le connecteur ou l'expression qui assure la cohérence logique de la structure argumentative.
- "The data strongly supports our hypothesis. ___, we must remain cautious about drawing definitive conclusions before the peer review process is complete." (connecteur de nuance)
- "Many experts have called for stricter regulations. ___, several major industry leaders have publicly endorsed this reform, which signals a rare consensus." (connecteur d'ajout renforcé)
- "The initial pilot programme failed to meet its targets. ___, it provided invaluable insights that directly informed the design of our revised strategy." (connecteur de concession positive)
- "We have examined the economic impact, the social consequences, and the environmental cost. ___, it is clear that a comprehensive and coordinated response is the only viable path forward." (connecteur de conclusion)
Correction

- "The initial pilot programme failed to meet its targets. However, it provided invaluable insights that directly informed the design of our revised strategy."
