Exercises B2 : how to use if-then in Spanish (practice and corrections)

These exercises let you practise the three types of hypothetical structures covered in the lesson: the real/possible, the imaginary, and the past/unreal. Train yourself to select the correct verb form depending on the situation expressed.

Exercise 1 — The right rule in the right place

Fill in each blank with the correct form of the verb in brackets, applying the rule of the corresponding hypothetical type (type 1, 2 or 3).

1. Si ___ (tener, tú, subjonctif imparfait) más tiempo libre, aprenderías a tocar la guitarra.
2. Si ___ (llover, indicatif présent) esta tarde, cancelamos el partido.
3. Si ___ (estudiar, ella, subjonctif plus-que-parfait) más, habría aprobado el examen final.
4. Si ___ (hablar, nosotros, indicatif présent) con el director, encontramos una solución.

Exercise 2 — These sentences contain an error

Each sentence contains one error related to the hypothetical structure. Identify it and rewrite the entire sentence correctly.

1. Si tendría dinero, viajaría por todo el mundo.
2. Si hubiera avisado antes, habrían preparar la cena.
3. Si llegas tarde mañana, perderías el tren.
4. Si hubieras estudiado, aprobarías el examen de ayer.

Exercise 3 — Which hypothetical type applies here?

For each sentence, choose the option that correctly completes the hypothetical structure according to the type indicated in brackets.
