Exercise 1 — Building the passive voice with ser

Complete each sentence by correctly conjugating the auxiliary ser and making the past participle agree with the subject.

  1. Las cartas ___ (enviar) por el director la semana pasada.
  2. El informe ___ (redactar) por la secretaria esta mañana.
  3. Los documentos ___ (firmar) por los responsables ayer.
  4. La comida ___ (preparar) por los cocineros cada día.
Correction

  1. Las cartas fueron enviadas por el director la semana pasada.
  2. El informe fue redactado por la secretaria esta mañana.
  3. Los documentos fueron firmados por los responsables ayer.
  4. La comida es preparada por los cocineros cada día.

Exercise 2 — Correcting passive voice errors

Each sentence contains one error related to passive voice construction or past participle agreement. Rewrite the entire sentence correctly.

  1. La carta fue redactado por el director.
  2. Se vende pisos en este barrio.
  3. Los libros son leído por los estudiantes.
  4. El acuerdo fue firmada por las dos empresas.
Correction

  1. La carta fue redactada por el director.
  2. Se venden pisos en este barrio.
  3. Los libros son leídos por los estudiantes.
  4. El acuerdo fue firmado por las dos empresas.

Exercise 3 — Passive voice: choosing the correct construction

For each situation, choose the correct Spanish sentence from the four options provided.

  1. On veut exprimer que des employés sont recherchés sans mentionner qui les cherche. Quelle phrase utiliser ?
  2. Quelle phrase est la transformation passive correcte de : ‘García Márquez escribió el libro’ ?
  3. Quelle est la principale différence entre la passive avec ser et la passive réfléchie avec se en espagnol ?
  4. Parmi ces quatre phrases, laquelle illustre correctement la passive réfléchie avec se ?
Correction

  1. Se necesitan empleados.
  2. El libro fue escrito por García Márquez.
  3. La passive avec se s’utilise surtout quand l’agent n’est pas mentionné, tandis que la passive avec ser introduit l’agent avec por.
  4. Se habla español en esta tienda.
